Live 2-hour virtual workshop
The Right Revenue Number
Financial decision-making and ethical considerations in private practice
Most therapists have never calculated what their practice actually needs to generate. In two hours, with your own numbers in front of you, you’ll work it out — and leave understanding what that number means for your pay, your fees, and your caseload.
Co-presented with Amber Dugger, founder of Profit for Keeps®
Busy practice. Full caseload. Still wondering.
“I make good money and I still feel broke.”
“I’m full, but I still don’t feel like I’m making enough.”
“I don’t know what I should be paying myself.”
When you see a financial gap, it’s easy to jump straight into fix-it mode: more clients, higher rates, fewer expenses.
Two therapists can have the exact same income gap with completely different numbers underneath it. The gap alone can’t tell you what to do next. Knowing what your practice actually needs to generate can — and that’s a number you can calculate.
This workshop helps you stop guessing.
You work through your own numbers, live.
During the workshop, you’ll calculate your personalized Profit for Joy® Number, the monthly revenue your practice needs to generate to support your pay, business expenses, taxes, profit and reserves, sustainable capacity, and the life you want your practice to make possible.
Your Profit for Joy® Number is built from six key parts of your practice:
Those six are the inputs, not a checklist of problems. You bring your real numbers for each one, we walk through the calculation together, and they add up to the revenue your practice needs to generate.
We also examine the ethical and professional considerations that can arise when financial pressure intersects with decisions about fees, workload, clinical capacity, treatment decisions, termination, and continuity of care.

Three things you take home.
Your Profit for Joy® Number
The monthly revenue your practice needs to generate to support your pay, your obligations, and the life you actually want — calculated from your own numbers, not an arbitrary revenue goal.
An understanding of what your number means
How revenue, pricing, expenses, owner pay, cash flow, and capacity combine to produce it — and what that tells you about your pay, your fees, and your caseload before you change anything.
Your 30-Day Cash Plan
A simple plan for putting your numbers into action over the next 30 days, so you know what needs to be allocated, protected, and paid based on the revenue your practice is generating.
From guessing and reacting to clarity, calm, and control.

The Ethics CE details.
Private-practice clinicians make financial decisions that affect both the sustainability of their businesses and the delivery of professional services — yet most of us entered private practice without a method for determining what the practice actually needs to generate. This training applies relevant professional ethical standards to financial and practice-management decisions through guided exercises and therapist-specific case scenarios.
At the conclusion of this training, participants will be able to:
- Calculate and evaluate an individualized monthly practice revenue requirement based on owner compensation, practice financial obligations, and realistic clinical and operational capacity.
- Analyze how financial pressures related to revenue, pricing, expenses, owner compensation, cash flow, and capacity may create ethical and professional considerations involving fees, workload, client welfare, clinical judgment, treatment decisions, termination, and continuity of care.
- Apply relevant professional ethical standards and a structured ethical decision-making framework to financial and practice-management scenarios.
Training provided through Living Arts Psychotherapy. Presented by Maren Londahl-Smidt, LCSW & Amber Dugger.
Who it’s for: Licensed mental health professionals in private practice — clinical social workers, licensed clinical mental health counselors and professional counselors, marriage and family therapists, psychologists, and other eligible behavioral health professionals. Solo and small group practice owners; self-pay, insurance-based, and mixed-pay practices all welcome.
*CE credit requires attending the live, interactive training and satisfying the CE provider’s attendance and completion requirements. Replay viewing does not qualify for CE credit.
